No. 29 - The 60" Petit Bateau, Polished Brass with Drain and Overflow
The Petit Bateau (little boat) tub is a re-designed version of another, much older tub produced in France at the turn of the 19th century. Instead of maintaining the same traditional broad lines, our design team produced a more modern elegant, wider step rounded base and narrower roll top lip. This presents a very elegant variation and softer form of the original tub.
This is our fabulous Polished Brass version. This tub has a pure brass coated and polished exterior; it has a thick cast iron center and a high gloss, high grade enameled interior. While we apply a protective clear beeswax to the tub exterior before shipping, the brass will naturally tarnish over time. Further applications of beeswax will slow any patina and to remove any unwanted patina, a soft cloth and some polish will work perfectly.
The brass is applied to the tub exterior as it exits the mold portraying natural, interesting and unique mold markings which truly enhance the beauty of the tub.
At only 60’ long, this beautiful little tub offers a well proportioned bathing space. It is very elegantly styled and it offers a good depth to the overflow to cover most of the body. While it remains relatively spacious, this 60” Petit Bateau bathtub is only recommended for one medium sized bather.
Polished Brass
We use pure brass for the exteriors on the Brass Collection. The cast iron tub is left in its original form as it exits the mold and cleaned of any excess iron scale. We then finish the inside of the tub with thick, bright white enamel before completing the exterior. Onto the raw iron exterior, we apply twelve layers of molten brass.
Since the brass is applied in a liquid molten form, this allows it to enter all of the cracks, crevices and small cavities that occur naturally during the casting process. This gives each tub its own unique beauty.
The brass has a natural shiny gold reflective living finish that will tarnish and develop a noticeable patina over the years. If you enjoy watching the tub age as it moves through life in your home, do nothing to the surface when it becomes marked. These marks will alter and change in color over time. The exterior will develop its own very special and unique patina, produced by the natural environment in the home. If you prefer that the brass remains shiny and bright, simply wipe away any stains or marks with a soft cloth and some Mothers polish.
